91 Honda Accord, 211K, driven a couple of times a month. It only runs in 2nd gear, displaying the shift light, most of the time. Occassionally it will run in all 4 gears. No rhyme or reason when it decides to cooperate? Any ideas?
When the transmission’s electronic controller detects a problem, it defaults to “limp home” mode in which only 2nd gear is available. This transmission definitely needs to be evaluated to see exactly what repairs it needs. If you delay the repairs any longer, you will only increase the amount of the repair bill.
Take it to an independent transmission shop for an evaluation. DO NOT go to AAMCO, Lee Myles, Cottman, Mr. Transmission, or any other chain operation unless you want to be charged for a new/rebuilt trans, whether you actually need one or not.
