‘A mouse moved into my car. I decided she could stay.’

I had to haul one away to the dump once. I was afraid what I would find underneath but it had all caved in years before.

I grew up in the Adirondack Mountains of Up-State New York on the Schroon River in a log cabin. We did not get electricity until I was 5-years old (1955) and an outhouse (loo). We did not get indoor plumbing until I was 7-years old. We had a chamber pot, but if you used it, you had to dump and clean it… I had no problem hitting the loo rather than cleaning the pot… In the winter, it was a cold dark trip, but still better than pot cleaning…

There are homes not too far from me that have outhouses. They are built next to the street so they can be serviced. They sit a little elevated with a door facing the road for the service guy to get the barrel and replace with new barrel. We are one of the only states that still allow outhouses. Some of these homes are 3-4 bedroom colonials that sell for $800,000. They do have running water, but no commode. This is so they don’t have to build a septic system. The wastewater is just grey water which can be dumped anywhere.
