So… I have a transmission/clutch problem on my 99 accord. Does not want to go into gear while the car is running. With clutch all the way in doesn’t not want to go. It feels like it’s forcing. But the car lets me put it into gear with it off. If I start the car with it in first gear, it catches and goes. Any ideas. Thanks
First, bleed the hydraulic clutch system. If that doesn’t work, replace the slave cylinder. If that doesn’t work, replace the clutch master cylinder. If that doesn’t work, replace the clutch and pressure plate.
The slave and master might be OK, but they are cheap to replace and don’t require the transmission to come out.
The clutch master cylinder is leaking internally, and isn’t developing the hydraulic pressure required to operate the clutch.

1st make sure your floor mat is not bunched up under the clutch pedal not allowing the pedal to go full travel… that can also not allow the clutch safety switch to work…
Agreed, this sounds like a hydraulic issue, not a clutch issue if it is shifting gears normally…
If bleeding doesn’t work, then I would replace both the clutch master cylinder and clutch slave cylinder as they are probably both about the same age and use…
BTW years a ago my 1992 Civic lost all pressure, I checked the fluid level and the master was empty, I filled it back up and blead the system, no leaks found and years and years later has not done it again, still have the Civic…
I see a visit to transmission shop in your future…
I’ve replaced my Corolla’s clutch master cylinder 2 or 3 times over the years for that same symptom. Has always done the trick. If pumping the clutch pedal a couple of times helps, that confirms the clutch master cylinder is the most likely culprit. There’s other possibilities as mentioned above. Anything that prevents the transmission input shaft from free-wheeling (as it is when disconnected from the engine) when the clutch pedal is depressed will cause similar symptoms. One unusual cause for this symptom is the transmission input shaft bushing located in the center of the flywheel is worn and sticking.
