Shortly after buying a 97 dogde dakota v6 2wd I started having problems with it staying running, meaning, in the first few minutes of driving it died at stops. Later, it wouldn’t start. I finally got it started, but as soon as I put it in gear it dies.
The problem might be with the Idle Air Control circuit.
There’s a component on the throttle body called an IAC valve. This valve controls the idle speed under all conditions. If the IAC valve fails to go the proper position for the idle condition the engine can stall.
If you can keep the engine running with a light application to the gas pedal, there’s a problem with the IAC circuit.
