96 Pontiac sunfire wont start sometimes white smoke from intake/ throttle body

I have a 96 Pontiac sunfire 2.4 L when i go to start it sometimes it will crank right up other times it turns over but wont catch and lately there’s been white smoke coming from intake

The timing chain/guides may be worn.

So how would i go about fixing this myself I purchased a timing light but found out there Is no distributer cap

You have to remove a valve cover to watch the valve action.

Then get on the crank bolt with a breaker bar and socket.

Turn the engine over by hand in the normal direction.

Then turn the engine over by hand in the opposite direction.

If the crankshaft can be turned 6° or more in the opposite direction before there’s any valve action, the timing chains/guides are worn.
