93 subaru auto trans brake won't release shifter

93 subaru legacy wagon awd auto, press on brake pedal & won’t release shifter,unless you press the button at the bottom of shifter.

You probably need to replace the shift interlock mechanism.

If you take the console apart, you should be able to find the mechanism adjacent to the shift lever when the lever is in the “Park” position. When you press the brake pedal, you should see the mechanism release its hold on the lever. If this does not happen, then you need to replace the mechanism.
