91 jimmy starter

trying to pull the starter and my haynes manual says remove the crossmember…can i do this on jackstands or do i need a lift? i don’t want this to fall on me for the sake of a stupid starter…and which is exactly the crossmember? thanks for any tips.

The crossmember is a single corrugated solid steel part that spans the frame, usually at front passenger side doors, left to right. It supports the weight of the transmission in rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive vehicles under driving conditions. In your case, it’s in your way. It is removed by four nuts, when it should drop. Look for a fairly wide (about four inches) flat part with curves on the edges that goes from driver to passenger side. Four nuts should remove and replace it.
