5 Speed Manual Clutch engagement Pontiac Sunfire

On my 2005 Sunfire 2.2 ecotec sometimes when moving off in 1st gear if i begin to release clutch and then add gas not more than 1000 1500 rpm i feel like a slight slip or jerk when clutch grabs engine isn’t trying to stall and all other gears work fine Is this just me letting off of the clutch too quickly sometimes causing that slight slippage feel/ rougher clutch engagement as i finish slipping while starting off in 1st
When I upshift i usually clutch in move shifter then clutch out to bite and back on gas very light
Im trying to make this clutch last as long as possible car only has about 54,000 miles on it now
Thank You everyone!

That is only 2700 miles per year, probably a lot of around town driving. If it gets any worse you will have to replace the clutch or just drive it to where it won;t move and replace the car if the repair bill exceeds the value.

Is this your first vehicle with a manual transmission ? It sounds like you are being too careful. Plus this clutch probably has alot more wear because of the low city miles.

Find a steep hill (road) and take off from a stop in 1st gear, get the vehicle moving and the rpms up kinda high, then instead of shifting into 2nd gear, shift it into 5th gear as you would any other gear, if it bogs the engine way down and or stalls it out, the clutch is fine, if it slips with your foot off the clutch pedal, you will be replacing the clutch soon…

If you are slipping the clutch too much taken off in 1st, then you can overheat the pressure plate and flywheel and cause what is called clutch chatter, meaning the pressure plate and flywheel will have hot spots in it and will grab, release, grab, release causing the vehicle to shake while 1st taking off from a stop, it will almost feel like coming to a stop and forgetting to push the clutch in at a low/slow speed… Give it a little more rpms and release the clutch a little faster…

You can also break the clutch disc torsion springs, losing the torsional damping while engaging the clutch…

no i had a 99 Saturn sl2 for almost 9 years that was a 5 speed and clutch was still working when i traded it in at 225k starting to act up but was still functional i really like this old pontiac and want to keep it as long as possible i know at some point it will have to have a clutch but i want to prolong that as long as possible i think its just me messing up my coordination occasionally bc the car drives great most of the time i usually try to keep rpms under 2k when starting off in 1st sometimes closer to 1200 just enough to not stall or bog the engine down
