4WD slips into neutral

1994 Ranger slips out of 4 wheel drive while driving. Is this serious? This is a ‘manual lock the hubs’ 4wd. We have had the transfer case(?) replaced by the dealer about 5 years ago. Very expensive proposition! We only put it into 4wd in order to keep it ‘lubed’.

Are you putting it into 4wd on dry pavement? If so, that’s why this is happening and also why you had to replace your transfer case.

I agree. The part-time 4WD on that vehicle is designed for getting you out of a ditch or for off-road driving. If you drive it on dry, paved roads, you will cause damage to the transfer case. If you want confirmation of this, just read your Owner’s Manual.
