$295 For The Air In The Tires (Not A Typo)

"The Day The Earth Stood Still", a true classic

I hope you mean the “original” and not that awful remake with Keanu Reeves. The original is a GREAT movie.

Oh yeah, the original. In black & white. I would not even bother to watch the remake.

There was a remake?

^
It was very quickly forgotten…and with good reason.

I would never have watched it even if I’d known it existed. Any producer and/or director so lacking in imagination as to resort to trying to remake what’s already been done cannot possibly produce anything worth watching. That’s a conclusion I’ve reached after watching remakes. {:smiley:

the same mountainbike: I hear ya! I once received “War of the Worlds” from Netflix and discovered it was the remake. I watched about 15 or 20 minutes then put it back in the mailbox.

But, the presence of Tom Cruise should have given that film added…gravitas!

As a member of the Scientology “religion” he apparently believes that personality problems are caused by space aliens lurking inside our heads. Shouldn’t a religion that was created in the 1950s by a serial huckster and science fiction writer endow the esteemed Mr. Cruise with a lot of credibility on the topic of invaders from outer space?

;-))

The real remake of "War Of the Worlds’ was Independence Day.

The remake with Tom Cruise was crap. I thought Steven Spielberg should have done better.

@sgtrock21

From Excelsior motorcyccle UK history, could be any one of the three!

“The company was re-registered as Excelsior Motor Company Ltd. to avoid confusion with the American Excelsior company, and the German Excelsior Fahrrad Motorad-Werke.”

That would explain a LOT! But I won’t name names… {:smiley:

I was hopeful for the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still - what with the advances in CGI and all. There were some intriguing changes, but overall, it just didn’t work. The original was creative and tied things up very neatly. A well written and well filmed piece.

And if you want to talk about being disappointed! Try Dino deLaurentis’s Dune!

I’ve never seen a remake that was anywhere near as good as the original. Classics become classics for a reason. Modifying them to modern standards using today’s largely terrible actors is like hammering on a '64 XKE to try to make it into a Civic.

@moutainbike Agree! The remakes of Inspector Clouseau (Pink Panther series) without Peter Sellers were pathetic. Similar with the remake movie of Get Smart; Don Adams had this character perfected in the original series.

The only really good remake I saw was the 60s version of Mutiny on the Bounty, in color and starring Trevor Howard as the Captain Bligh and Marlon Brando as Fletcher Christian. The original was a 30s black and white version with Charles Laughton.

Even updating the technology on originals can ruin them. I have an old original B&W “West Side Story” and the scenes and music will tear your heart out. I watched the digitized and colorized version, and the music sounds canned and the life is gone from the scenes. But the big treat is listening to the vinyl soundtrack from the original. It’s unbelievable.

Airily returning to the original topic. :wink:

One of the best household tools I have spent money on is a small Kobalt air compressor. No more struggling with gas station air hoses in all sorts of weather. Easy to keep tires aired precisely in the comfort of my home garage. Just wish I had bought the little compressor many years earlier than I did.

Yeah, I’ve always found the gas station air hoses to be either broken or non-existent. It would be a frustrating odessy (sp?) driving from gas station to gas station on a half flat tire in search of a functioning air hose, especially in the rain or snow.

An added benefit of the home tire inflater is that you program how many pounds of pressure to have in the tires and you get that same amount in each tire without the hassle of adding and checking then adding more and checking and oops added to much gotta bleed some air out. Of course, I verify with a tire gauge that the compressor remains accurate.

I grew up 3 blocks from the professor’s house in (original) “The Day The Earth Stood Still”.

@circuitsmith :slight_smile:

I checked and the library still has that movie-DVD now of course. I might watch it again just for the old cars.

Yes a compressor is very useful. In the winter around here, the gas station compressors are always frozen and that’s when you really need air. You can lose a good 5 plus pounds when its below zero. Even the little $100 portable compressors will handle a small nail gun and other stuff so very useful. I have both.
