2024 Taos Cannot Get Parts

Looking for suggestions - 2024 Taos that took a deer hit in the front end, Minor cosmetic damage, but once torn down, body shop needed a new Guide Support (2GJ-805-705-B). VW North America says part is on national back order, no eta. Have talked to the dealership, VW Customer Care, the dealership again, but still my car cannot be fixed due to a $38 dollar part nobody can get. Seems crazy to me.
Anyone have suggestions on how to get communication to VW on this?

A 10 second search on DuckDuckGo provided this link:

This is from that web link…

Looks like the part is about 45 minutes from my house…

That website says “Available for Order”. I think that’s corporate-speak for “get in line, and wait”. As in “Your call is important to us…”

I just placed the order.

The price came to $76.62 with tax and shipping.

Wow. Is the expected delivery time reasonable?

What difference does it make?

If you need the part, and they got it, that point is moot.

Had a new car got rearended, had to wait 3 months for parts luckily it was still driveable. 2014

The dealer can notify you when the part is released for shipment, same as the corporate office can. This is a supplier issue, VW warehouses are waiting for the parts to be manufactured.

National backorder can last a week, could take 6 months. How long have you been waiting?

Only 5 weeks so far, but I’m hearing other people have been waiting since fall 2024 for theirs.

Similar to your experience; last year Toyota/Lexus issued a list of over 200 parts, mostly plastic trim, grills and bumper covers that would take 3 to 12 months before availability due to a supplier that discontinued business operations with Toyota.

The business model used by auto makers was to pay for the tooling and a piece price for all parts orders. If the supplier went bust, the molds or dies were grabbed by the auto maker as their property and taken to a new supplier.

By the 2000s or so, the tooling cost was absorbed by the supplier as the cost of doing business. Supplier goes bust now, the auto maker must negotiate with the bankruptcy court. This is far more cumbersome and time consuming. It is also more likely as purchasing depertments whip suppliers to extract the last penny. Getting parts back in stock takes much, much longer.

I was just thinking that “Available for Order” meant back-ordered. Maybe they’ll take your order, but not charge until they have the item to deliver.

You know better than I do.

What we see online is just a catalog. I have never seen a parts catalog that was connected to inventory. After a part number is selected from the catalog, the clerk must check inventory in a separate computer program that controls in-house inventory.
Checking manufacture warehouse inventory is another step, internet access is required so if some reason the service is down, they can’t provide an ETA.

And to complicate things, those suppliers are scattered all over Asia and a few in Mexico.

Have you checked with car parts recyclers (AKA junkyards)? Car-parts.com show radiator supports for 2022 Tiguans, indicates they’re compatible. If they have that part they probably have what you’re looking for.

Is this part metal or plastic? Can existing bracket be straightened? This is only part you are waiting on?

Its a plastic part, and I’ve explored getting the part plastic welded, or otherwise fabricated, and the shop indicates with will void the warranty, not using certified parts.

Does your insurance provide a rental while your Taos is fixed? If you haven’t already, check your policy or call your insurer.
