how reliable are these and when do issues start appearing at what mileage does it occur at
Using the words “Jeep” and “reliable” in the same sentence is usually an oxymoron. The only exception is if one is saying “I wish my Jeep was more reliable” or “I got rid of my Jeep because it’s not reliable”, etc.
Some issue appear within the warranty period (less than 36,000 miles). Many more appear after the warranty is over.
This should tell you all you need to know. Most- (green) and least- (red) reliable vehicles, according to Consumer Reports:
As a follow-up to Texas’ post, here are CR’s specifics regarding the “problem areas” of the 2019 Grand Cherokee:
Build quality–Much worse than average
HVAC system–Worse than average
In-car Electronics–Much worse than average
Overall reliability–Worse than average
“Jeep” in general has an appeal that I just don’t understand…
I don’t understand Jeep worship either. I worked with a guy that is Jeep crazy. He and his wife have an old CJ at a ranch they own in NW New Mexico and as a result of that it seems he drives one in Central MD. The highest hills where he lives are the ones Travis Pastrana built on his farm. Off road here means parking lot.
If he’s like people in my area, in the unlikely event that he does drive off-road, he will be sure to not wash the Jeep for several months, so that people can see some mud on the fenders & doors, and thus establish his “Jeep cred”.
Yeah, I think he’s a mud lover.
There are a huge number of heavily “modified” off-roading type Jeeps in my part of the world that have clearly never been off the pavement. The “accessories” have gotten a little ridiculous; I think it’s part of this “Overland” trend. I don’t know. I’ll just stick to my 4 door sedan that does everything I “really” need to do in life, and just keep my “accessories” money. Nobody cares what I drive, or where they “think” I go offroading.
There are several employees at the local Lexus dealer that drive late model Grand Cherokees, these people have not yet been properly indoctrinated.
Jeep vehicles have a greater number of problems per 100 vehicles than the competition, but the difference goes unnoticed by many owners.
Based on a study of vehicles after 3 years of ownership, Jeep is almost as bad as Acura, Honda, Nissan and Subaru.
The 2022 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study is based on responses from 29,487 original owners of 2019 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. The study was fielded from July 2021 through November 2021.
My brother-in-law is a retired Chrysler plant manager and he drives a Honda Pilot even though he can get a better deal buying a Grand Cherokee.
Similarly, my old secretary had a boyfriend who worked for GM. When she was in the market for a new car, they visited a lot of showrooms, beginning with her favorite–Buick. Their last stop was a Honda showroom, and her boyfriend was so impressed with the build quality of the Civic that he insisted she buy one instead of “the garbage that we make”.
the original cherokee with the 4.0 I6 engine virtually invented the SUV largely due to its reliability. I owned 5 beginning with the last model built by Jeep before Chrysler bought them out.
In 1970 I was assigned to a remote Army signal site in Thailand. I’d always volunteer to go on a mail run to company HQ an hour’s drive away, just so I could drive our jeep.
Still just a kid, taking turns too fast, I was in heaven in my 4-on-the-floor convertible.
And which reminds me of the deuce-and-a-half I almost rolled off a hill side, likely killing the 20 GIs and Thai workers in back.
Them were the days…
You were lucky that you weren’t driving an M54 in Vietnam during that era.
The Jeep I drove in Nam was left over from the Korean war. Some of them had even served in WWII
In Vietnam, my brother, a Spec5, had the misfortune to get assigned to a Dodge pickup with the old flathead six under the hood. God only knows how old it was, or how low its compression was by the time that he drove it.
The base that he was sent to visit–by himself–was at the top of a small mountain, and as he drove higher and higher, the truck began going slower and slower… until it was moving at more or less a walking pace. Then, small arms fire began to break out in the jungle adjacent to the road. He lived to tell about it, but at the time he was pretty sure than he was a goner because the truck was so dangerously slow.
Believe me, I knew it.
