2019 Honda Accord Hybrid: intermittent "brake system" warning light and on-dash warnings

not completely…it can be transmitted via contact transmission from droplets too. That said, while letting it air out in the sun is probably sufficient, I don’t think sanitizing the interior of a car is a bad idea either.

I seriously doubt if it would be “100% protection”, but even if it would be, I don’t really want to hang around for any length of time after having the car inspected. I always go to an inspection station in a rural area, where there are never any lines. Yes, it takes me about 35 minutes to get there, but it is a beautiful ride through farm country. Hanging around for at least 30 minutes before I begin to drive home is not on my agenda.

you can always use a sanitizing mist spray when you get home. spray it with windows and doors closed and walk away. you can get one of those plastic throw away steering wheel covers and put it on during inspection.

True, that would probably work. But since the truck is all I need, I figure, why take the risk? I’m fully in favor of strictly enforced environmental restrictions. No doubt about that. But IMHO Calif officials would have served the state better by deferring emissions testing requirements for high Covid risk vehicle owners, elderly, co-morbidity, etc, until after the threat has subsided. There’s just no bang for the buck.

I expect the reason the state officials didn’t grant this exception is b/c the concern it would reduce the testing facilities income. The tests are done by privately owned small businesses, and if their income is reduced they’d have to fire some of their staff, who will then collect unemployment, a hit to the state’s budget. Makes sense, but that could easily be mitigated, say by requiring those who qualify for a deferral to pay an in-lieu of fee. Another mitigation would be to still require the test, but change the procedure so it doesn’t require the tech to enter and drive the vehicle.

I personally know of three other people who have been affected by this problem. So there must be quite folks affected state-wide, hundreds of thousands maybe. One has to wonder how this will affect their decision in the upcoming election to recall the governor?

Any updates on what the cause of this is. I have a 2022 Accord with this issue and was wondering

You ever get this resolved?

  1. Keep returning to dealership to have it fixed under the warranty.
  2. Keep all service reports just in case it is not resolved.
  3. Elevate complaint up the corporate chain, as instructed in your owners manual, if problem is not resolved.
  4. Research lemon laws in your state.

Yeah will do. I was hoping to see if someone had gotten this fixed to know what the actual problem is.

Four model years later, might be a whole new set of problems Honda inflicted on their vehicles.

update from the original poster:

not resolved until now, my lemon case court date is late February, so I hope to get rid of this POS with no financial losses in the end

by now, Honda “tried” to repair it around 10 times, mostly in the “parts cannon” paradigm, and the latest was replacing the 12V battery, which was immediately followed with 2 more self-diagnostic reports, which I now post to youtube and send to the dealer, so they ask less questions

Just curious why Honda has allowed this problem to escalate like this. Manufacturers usually have a few highly skilled technical specialists on staff — in some cases they might be among the engineers who designed the car — to address these sorts of problems, when the local dealership’s staff just can’t figure it out. These folks often have access to special electronic tools, such as software emulators, logic analyzers, CAN bus analyzers, etc. Has one of Honda’s technical experts been involved?

Years ago I had a non-car related challenge to solve when I worked at a tech company. The software staff had run into a problem they couldn’t solve using their standard techiques. They had been working on it diligently for several weeks. I was asked to take a look, and used some of the above techniques and solved it in less than 3 hours. It was a simple software bug, but very hard to spot without using some hardware debugging tools.

I have a appointment Tuesday. See what they tell me

they genuinely don’t care, George.
it was escalated to Honda corporate tech.team, from 2 different dealerships, same results.

first two visits to the service they downplayed the issue like it was a joke, until I was able to drive the car right into the dealership with message on the display and they connected scanner to it while it was still actively reported and … “no issues, let us replace the infotainment unit as it’s the messenger delivering the news we do not like”

I was fortunate even to show the same issue on non-hybrid loaner Accord at some point, so it looks like Honda does not care, likely because “they all do it” for the newer Accords

no, only bird droppings

2020 HAH EX-L. I had the same brake system warning messages (and other system issues) after a car wash around the 6000 mile mark and as I recall (cannot find the paperwork) the dealer reseated an electrical connector related to the BCM. Then there was this recall: Statement by American Honda Regarding Body Control Module Recall: 2018-2020 Honda Accord, 2018-2020 Honda Accord Hybrid and 2019-2020 Honda Insight

Now my HAH has over 38K without any recurrence. The only other issue with this vehicle was when the 12V battery died right before the 3yr/36K warranty expired

Otherwise, this has been the best vehicle I have ever owned.

I had quite a lot of hope when this recall was done, but no… did not help me at all.

Checking/reseating BCM connectors is something dealer wanted to do, but Honda of America made them to replace 12V battery and send me away instead.
Trying to convince them to do that next.
On the positive side - I have a shiny new battery on 3-years old car.

What was interesting is how quickly they isolated and fixed that problem. I was only in the waiting area for 40 minutes – as if they knew exactly what to do. Hope Honda will do the right thing with your situation.

BTW, the replacement 12V battery is a Honda-branded Interstate battery, different from the factory installed battery. Should be much better.

Just said not to worry about it that sometimes it’s caused by traffic lights.
