Usually the radio is on when I turn the key off. When I start it, sometimes the radio comes on and other times it doesn’t. If it does not come on, I have to push the on/volume dial button a few times to get it to come on. Any ideas on what is going on or what I can check?

You need a new radio.
Just on principle, check to make sure the power lead is securely attached. It’s barely possible something else is wrong like a failing Body Control Module but it does sound like an internal fault. Take the vehicle to a shop that specializes in car audio.
