I’m going to slightly amend your good advice.

The OP should ask friends, relatives, co-workers, and neighbors for the names of indy trans shops with which they have had a good experience. If anyone recommends Cottman, Lee Myles, Mr. Transmission, or AAMCO, be sure to ignore that recommendation.

Besides the good advice above, ask the shop you use for routine repairs and maintenance. They’ll know the better transmission shops in town. Chain shops tends to get lower reviews here compared to independents.

Or bite the bullet and buy a GM remanufactured unit, if the vehicle is worth keeping. I’ve had bad experiences with trans shops, even the highly recommended ones in my area. Next time, I vow to buy a “crate” trans and be done with it or scrap the vehicle.
