About a year ago the tail gate on my 2012 Subaru Outback started to randomly refuse to unlatch. I have cleaned around the seals, but that doesn’t seem to make a difference. Most of the time I can get things out via the side doors, but when I want to unpack a big load it’s a hassle to put it nicely. Your thoughts?
Take it to the dealer or a body shop and ask them to fix or replace the latch. That is my thought.

Hopefully you have a owners manual for this car, there’s a little removable panel.on the inside of the rear hatch that you can hopefully get to the latch to open the lift gate. You need a flat head screwdriver to work the latch
The dealership has probably done this many times, your local Subaru shop might be an option as well.
Haven’t had to do this with my 2015 Forester but the basic procedure is the same on Dad’s crv and moms Prius.
