If a week prior your oil light comes on so u add a litre only of oil then during the week u do heaps of driving, come the next weekend u leave the car sitting for the weekend go to start it and its making a massive banging or clicking noise in the engine what could this be
If your oil light came on, you needed more than 1 litre of oil, probably closer to 3 litres
You need to check the oil level with the dipstick.
The massive banging/clicking probably means you ran out of oil and now need a new engine.
Welcome, btw you have been redirected to Car Talk…
As mentioned above, a banging noise sounds like you may have spun a rod bearing and now have a rod knock, and a rod knock means either a rebuild or another engine…
I recommend that you learn how to read an engine dip stick before this happens again, rather you repair/replace your engine or buy a new vehicle…
Never just dump oil in an engine without checking the level 1st, the oil light could have just been a sensor going/gone bad…
Sorry you are having this issue…
If you added oil without being low on oil or because you had a faulty sensor and did not check the dipstick first, you could have put the oil level high enough for the crankshaft to hit the oil and whip it into a foam and the oil pump can’t pump foam so no oil gets to the bearings. Or if you did not add enough oil to bring it above the add oil mark that will also starve to bearings of oil.
A loud banding and a clicking are very different things. If it is loud banging it means tour engine is now a great big paperweight.
