I recently purchased the 4 door MINI Countryman. I noticed that the brakes were grinding despite it being a new car. I took it to the dealership and they stated they changed the pads and rotors on both the front and back tires. While this initially reduced the noise it’s now back. The grinding is particularity noticeable when reducing speed from 30mpr or less. I took the car back to the dealer and they say its a normal noise…“grinding” brakes normal hmmm???..Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated…
Is the car parked outside in damp or rainy weather?
Brake rotors can develop a thin layer of rust overnight, which wears off with use.
Thanks for the reply…Nope, the car is parked inside a garage at night…
Whether you park inside or outside, you can develop the same rust on on the rotors. How long does this grinding last, and how bad is it? If only a stop or two, then I’d say it’s normal. If it takes hours for it to clear, then you may need new rotors.
My vehicles always do it for a stop or two after sitting overnight, providing there’s moisture in the air. If it continues for more than a couple stops, then it’s time for me to climb under the car and check it out.
It usually remains…the dealer stated they changed to rotors… is there anything else it could be?
asilram — "... the dealer stated they changed to rotors ..."They only did it to collect the warranty money from the factory.
I think they should fix it again. It’s an '11 model. It has to be covered. And get (and retain) documentation of every time they touch it. I’m thinking lemon laws here, but you’ll have to check your state to see what they are specifically for you.
