If the CEL is steady, post the codes.
If the CEL is flashing, have it towed to your mechanic.

That it “sounds like a lawn mower” implies that it’s loud. A hole in the muffler or exhaust could cause the check engine light to come on from too much oxygen. If you do have a serious exhaust leak the car is potentially unsafe.
