Ask them for a list of the codes saved in the OBD-II system. Let us know what they are and we can help you decipher them. If you want to get it fixed right away, ask them to explain how their solution relates to the codes they see. They probably don’t expect you to know much and admitting it might help you score points and avoid getting taken. Ask several questions about the issues. If the answers to the questions seem to fit together, then you can probably trust them. If they use lots of jargon that you don’t understand you should be suspicious.

Think positive, could be something very easy to address, if you feel lucky, maybe the repair will be done gratis. Good idea to remember the CEL is only the messenger, not the message. When the CEL turns on, that can only help the car owner.
Yes, but I think it’s interesting that one of the aftermarket warranty companies uses the slogan “When that light comes on, it’s game over!” in order to scare people into buying their (probably) worthless warranty.
You’re out of warranty, why not just go to a nearby car parts store that reads codes for free? Let us know what they are.
