2008 Subaru Legacy - Whooshes

Need to know what kind of sound is normal for the turbo to make… Test drove a 2008 Subaru Legacy GT Limited and the heard a whooshing noise coming from the engine when i tried to get up to speed. is that normal or should i steer away from buying it. mileage is about 198,000 and both interior and exterior are very clean.

hard to tell without hearing it. but I would say it is probably normal.
but, with that mileage if the turbo has not been changed it is probably time too.
also, I believe your timing belt and water pump is supposed to be changed at every 105k miles. so that is going to need to be done.

I tell people in general to never buy a Subaru.

Since you are serious, get a shop you trust to do a prepurchase inspection. They can tell you if there is anything wrong with it. This should cost around $150 and it’s worth it.

Anyone who buys a 15 year old car–of any make–without having it vetted by a trusted mechanic, is VERY foolish. And, if the vehicle in question has a turbo-charger, buying that OLD vehicle without a thorough pre-purchase inspection is an act that approaches financial insanity–IMHO.

And I would find a Subaru specialist for the PPI. Being a turbo does have an upside, I think they are less prone to the common head gasket problems of that era.
