Does it have a high rpm at idle in Park, and also will not over 40 mph??
Or, does the engine rev up high (rpm) while driving, but the vehicle wont go over 40 mph??
High RPM at 40 mph… Your transmission is pushing up daisies, it has crossed the River Styx, It has gone to the great beyond… Yours is an EX-transmission!
Get ready for a $5000 replacement transmission… or scrap the car. Your choice. Sorry.
