2005 Solara Weird Noise

2005 Toyota solara with the 2.4. Makes a weird noise at idle. Almost like a buzzing/scraping. Idles smooth and runs great, no check engine light. Just has the weird noise.

It can’t be heard while driving (although that doesn’t mean it’s not occurring while driving, just that if it is, I can’t hear it, but it can definitely be heard at idle with the hood open.

Only parts I replaced under the hood were PCV valve, air filter, spark plugs and power steering pump. Used OEM parts for both. PCV, Air filter and Plugs were preventative maintenance since the car has 200k miles and ps pump was because the old one was leaking. Nothing else under the hood has been touched besides those things, however before those things I listed above were replaced the car did not make that noise.

It SEEMS to be coming from coil pack/engine block area but not 100% sure. I’m inclined to think coil or injector is bad but then the car would be running poorly or have a check engine light, neither of which it’s doing.

What could be the issue?

Sounds like a worn timing chain.

Take the serpentine belt off temporarily. Run the car - briefly. See if the noise changes.

The stranger part is i drove for about half an hour, stopped the car still running in park and opened the hood, noise is gone.

Then i restarted the engine and the noise came back

Could be throttle body whistling, is the air cleaner lid secured?

Could be a large vacuum leak or sometimes a PCV valve can chatter like that.

You should pin-point the noise with a stethoscope of length of hose placed to your ear.

You know what I think it could be? I used aftermarket autozone brand for PCV valve. I wonder if that’s causing the rattling and buzzing.

Because come to think of it the noise started after replacing plugs, air filter and pcv valve

I think i’ll try going to dealership tomorrow and buying OEM PCV valve. Anyone think this could be the culprit?

Yea might have found the culprit

If the sound is coming from the pcv valve your shop should be able to verify that’s the source by the listening-hose method @Nevada_545 suggested above.

I’ve never had any pcv valve related noises but such a thing is definitely possible, as there’s potential rattling and whistling sources inside that gadget. My guess however, not the problem. A slightly loose spark plug can make weird noises. I’m thinking however it is something related to the power steering pump. @cigroller 's idea above would test that theory.

AZ is good for buying shop towels and washing your car, stay away from most of the parts they sell, most are junk…
