My 2005 Honda CRV (92,000 miles) recently started shuddering when accelerating from a stop. I took it in to have the front struts replaced (back were done about a year ago) and get it aligned. Was told I needed a new CV axel. All that got changed, but shudder wasn’t better. Took it back & was told steering was loose (car was pulling to the right after the alignment) and all was good. Not the case. Took it back and was told I needed the other front CV axel replaced. Still not better. Had all 4 tires replaced (it was time). Still not better. As a side note (might be relevant…I don’t know) my transmission had to be completely replaced/overhauled in Dec 2014. Was told someone had put in the wrong transmission fluid and there were metal shavings throughout. So in just over 6 months I’ve put close to $5000 into my ten year old, paid off car (nothing but normal maintenance until now).
Any ideas why it is still shuddering/vibrating? Reading on here, I’m supposed to make sure the wheel lug nuts are tight, but anything else I can check? Again, don’t know if this might be relevant, but the car spent its first five years in a cold climate (Germany) and has since been in South Florida. I am not a car person, obviously, so if you have some ideas for me, please keep it simple
Shuddering from a stop, I suspect a transmission problem. Unfortunately the shop you’ve been taking it to has just been guessing and throwing parts at it rather than correctly diagnosing the problem. The transmission work is only 7 months old, so you may still have some recourse if you have a warranty on the transmission.
First, you need to find a trustworthy local mechanic. Check the “mechanics files” part of this site for a recommended local mechanic. Then have him diagnose the problem correctly. Tell him what you wrote above. I suspect the transmission is the problem. If he can find evidence that the transmission is in fact the problem, then you should go back to the shop that did the transmission work and have them make it right.
Another possibility with this particular model is the differentials.
When–if ever–was the diff fluid changed?
Hondas of this type require *genuine" Honda dual-pump fluid, and they need to have this fluid changed at least every 60k miles.
VCD driver- don’t believe the diff fluid was changed- unless that is something that would have happened when the transmission was repaired? How much does something like that run?
Jesmed1 I’ll probably have to do that. The transmission was done at a different shop that the struts, alignment, & CV axels. Tires were done at a third place. I’ll see. What the mechanic files recommend for my area!
“unless that is something that would have happened when the transmission was repaired? How much does something like that run?”
No, it is not likely that this would have been done when the trans was repaired.
As to the cost, I am guessing that it would probably cost about $100 (fluid, crush washers, and labor) to have the fluid changed.
If you’re lucky, it may cost even less, but it is vital that ONLY genuine Honda Dual Pump Fluid is used. Nothing else is acceptable, unless you want more problems.
