2004 Honda Civic Having some stuttering and fluctuations of RPMs

Hi there,

I have a 2004 Honda Civic with 194k miles on it. Car is well maintained. Just recently it got cold in NY and the car started doing some weird stuff.

Basically, when idling at a stoplight, the cars rpm will fluctuate between 500-1000 and almost go to the point where it feels like the car is dying. Turn the car off and back on and it works fine but happens again. Also, when driving at a wide variety of speed the throttle response will be jerky (constantly pressing the peddle but the rpms bounce around and feels like the car is stopping and going).

The car is clean otherwise, not a single issue!

Any help or pointers would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

It sounds like the crankshaft position sensor is failing.

The tachometer gets its signal from the crank sensor.

Appreciate the quick response!

Can I drive with this problem for a few more days or is it critical enough to where I have to tow it to a shop?

How much should it cost to fix?

Anything else I should be on the look out for?

Thanks!
