My transmission went out on my 2004 Chevy Avalanche at 178,500 miles. Do I go with a rebuild of the original tranny or a used transmission from a salvage yard with 135,000 miles on it?
The problem with the one from the salvage yard is you don’t know how it had been maintained.
If the yard would provide a warranty it MIGHT be worth the gamble. But I would probably go with a rebuilt with a parts and labor warranty.
Rebuild, rebuild ,rebuild.
The labor to replace it is high enough to totally discount the junkyard transmission. These things sell for $1200 completely rebuilt at the car parts store all day long.
I won own of these SUV’s and I would do exactly that.
