An independent shop might do the same repair for almost half the price.

Possibly. Press to get dealer/Subaru(corporate) to pay for part or all of repair. Your only 5k over warranty on this. They are more willing if you did major services etc with Subaru dealer than not. Good luck.

Well it makes since if you need a new gasket if you don’t it means the dealer has a boat payment due. Sorry we have no way of knowing if you need a new one from what you told us. Can you tell us more, like why they may have said that? Why is it at the dealer? Head gasets don’t wear out they just fail for any number of reasons like over heating.
