2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee - Won't start

Hey all
My dad has a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee (6 CYL, 4.0 engine) and make recently it hasn’t been starting. The gas light comes on even though the gas tank is half full. He turns the switch and nothing happens but gas light keeps coming on. Car won’t start. Any idea what it could be? Over the weekend it was fine supposedly but one day it wouldn’t start and gas light kept coming on. It has 203k miles, he takes care of it pretty good too. He thinks it’s the fuel pump but not 100% sure any insight is appreciated
Thanks

Given the mileage and the flaky light I would suspect the fuel pump too. Does it run better when the tank is above 1/2 vs under 1/2? The increased volume of fuel could mask a dying fuel pump somewhat.

How do you know if the tank is half full? The gauge? Ignore it, it might be broken. Start by adding a couple of gallons of fuel and try to start it.

Your post about the problem is somewhat confusing. If the starter motor doesn’t work when “he turns the switch”, then having a fuel issue has nothing to do with that kind of problem. The starter circuit needs to be checked out in that case. If the starter is working and you believe there is a fuel problem then spray a small amount of starter fluid into the air intake and see if that makes the engine fire up briefly. If it does then you need to look into a fuel delivery problem.

Shift the transmission into neutral and then try starting the engine.

If the engine starts, the problem is with the park/neutral safety switch.
