2002 Subaru Impreza Acceleration/Gear issue

So my little 2.5RS Impreza has always had a bit of get-up-and-go when I’ve needed it. The other day, I needed to get up a hill a little quicker than usual, but when I put it into 2nd gear and came off the clutch, the tachometer nearly redlined and the car didn’t accelerate very much. Since that day (about a week now), every time I’m in gear and try to accelerate, the RPMs go up significantly without the car accelerating much, and then they come back down as I ease off the gas (when I finally reach the speed I want). I have to give it very limited gas in order for it to accelerate and remain at a normal RPM.

This is definitely not normal, but is it a big deal? Is it a sign of really bad things to come? How dangerous is it? How much will it cost to fix? Help!!

Sounds like the clutch is shot.

Yup. You have described the classic symptoms of a clutch that is slipping, and this is only going to get worse in short order.

In a few days, it will probably not “grab” at all. I would advise driving the car to your mechanic before you get stranded and have to be towed to the mechanic.

What you’re describing are the classic symptoms of a worn out clutch.

Like it or not, it’s time for a clutch replacement, and only a new clutch will solve this problem.

How many miles does the odometer show?

I’m over 128k. I figured something like this was coming sooner rather than later. Any suggestions as to what I can do to make the replacement of the clutch not so horrible on the wallet?

Thanks for the help!!

You don’t need to visit a Subaru dealer to get this fixed. Get a few quotes.
