2002 Mazda Protege 5

Vehicle has 100,000 miles on it. Very few problems until this year. Last month had to replace catalytic converter. Car is in the shop now & needs: (1)clutch (2)timing belt (3)Drive Belt (4)Shifter Assembly (5)Gas Filler Sleeve. Total about $2000.00 is it worth it?

Assuming the car is in good shape otherwise, yes, it’s worth it. If, on the other hand, the car is rusty and beat up, perhaps it’s not worth it. We can’t see the car.

You can’t replace the car for $2,000, and after you spend the money you should be able to drive it another 100,000 miles.

Believe it or not, $2,000 is not a horrible amount of money to spend on a car. Everything needed, except the shifter assembly, is routine maintenance, not repair.

(1)clutch Wear item
(2)timing belt Wear item
(3)Drive Belt ?? (Do you mean the belt that turns the generator etc? If so it is also a wear item.

All of the above are normal maintenance items. It’s just time.

(4)Shifter Assembly Could be many things.
(5)Gas Filler Sleeve. I have no idea what that might be.

It really sounds like somewhat typical items that are just at the end of their live and it is time to replace them. Likely they will then be good for another 100,000 miles.

Likely some of those items don’t need to be replaced today, but since the timing belt may be critical (Interference Engine) it really needs to be replaced and since it is likely most of the other items will need to be replaced before not too much longer and since you will be disassembling many of those parts to do the timing belt, it only makes sense to pay a little more now than to pay a lot more later.

I would expect you to get another 100,000 miles with maybe a little more repair and maintenance cost than you did the first 100,000 but not much more. Keep the maintenance up and it should be fine for a long time.
