2001 cougar transmission

I have a 2001 cougar with auto transmission that stopped on the drive and will only go forwards in all gears, except for park. In reverse or nuetral it moves forwards.

Any clues, it has done 106,000 miles and last week the clutch seemed to be slipping.

A friend looked at the trans oil and it looks dark red and oldish and there is a leak but the fluid level is correct.

It sounds like you have cooked the transmission to the point that the forward clutch pack is locked ‘on’. The ‘clutch slipping’ was the likely cause of the heat that has warped the friction and plain plates to the point that the clutch pack is locked. If this is the case, an overhaul is the only repair.
