The speedometer on my beetle doesn’t work and my mechanic caan’t pinpoint the problem. It seems to be the sensor but replaceing it doesn’t fix the problem, neither does a new instrument cluster.
Did the mechanic charge you for a new instrument cluster and/or sensor that did not fix the speedometer? Does your mechanic have a VW specific code reader?
The VW reader (VAGCOM) can check to see if the sensor is providing a signal to the car’s computer. I am not sure exactly what computer the year 2000 models had, but I believe it includes the speedometer signal.
He did not charge me for the cluster (put original one back in). There is a signal from the sensor. The speedometer works occasionally, just not all the time.
