2000 Grand Prix

Vent blower works fine in positions 3-5, but nothing in positions 1 or 2. What the…?

I had a similar problem with my 1999 Grand Prix. I took it in and they replaced a resistor (<$100 for parts and labor) and it was fine.

Low speeds resistor is burned out at control. Replace resistor.

Any possible way there are two fans? A low speed fan and a higher speed fan? Should I tell this mechanic to take a flying leap?

I have never heard of such a thing. That does not mean it could not be.

I vote for the resistors. Depending on the car it can be an easy fix or a difficult one. If it is a difficult one a handy skinny high school boy or girl with long fingers might be useful. Some cars have these things well buried. Agility and flexibility helps a lot.
