A tip for 2000 Corolla owners, I hope it helps someone. At 200,000 miles you could see on occasion steam billowing from under the hood when stopped and always smell antifreeze yet only added a little water once. Couldn’t tell where it was coming from, it stopped when the engine was off. It worried me to death for almost a year as it got worse so I changed the water pump and it’s still steaming. Now worried about the head gasket but the alternator had a slight bearing whine so I bit the financial bullet and replaced it because it mounts up solidly against the water pump and it stopped steaming 30,000 miles ago. I got off easy that time, I could have spent a lot of money on that one.
