1998 Toyota Camry clicks, but won’t start

battery makes clicking noise" but will not start auto - after a jump start car engine ran fine but when turned off would not restart.
Can anyone recommend anything/

Yes , new battery and have the alternator checked.

I’d also clean the battery terminals and cable ends.

If all that doesn’t do the trick ask your mechanic to measure the voltage at both starter terminals with the key in “start”. Both should measure at least 10.5 volts. Probe between terminal and starter case. If they do, and it doesn’t crank, replace the starter.

Unless it is more than 4-5 years old, good idea to have the battery load tested before replacing it.

Have the battery and alternator tested. If they’re good, have the connections cleaned and tightened. If that doesn’t help, it might be the starter. The starter solenoid contacts on Toyotas wear out and cause an intermittent no-start.

I don’t understand what you mean by ‘the battery makes clicking noise’. Batteries don’t make noise. Please describe EXACTLY what happens when you turn the key.
