Have a 97 f150 4.6 v8 with check engine light. Code reader says P0442 Evaporative Emission System Leak Detcted (Small Leak).
Already replaced gas cap and then the light came back on. Any ideas?
That code simply tells you the evap system wasn’t able to generate an appropriate sized vacuum within the specified time frame
Could be a rotten fuel sender seal, fuel filler hose, vapor line, canister, purge valve, vent valve, and so on
See where this is going?
If you want to be sure, pay for a proper diagnosis and repair

If you live where they salt the roads in the winter, check the metal fuel filler tube between the filler entrance and the tank. That rusted enough to make an opening on my previous pickup truck. That is something you can do before having to check all the other stuff.
