I have a 1995 Saturn SL1 with 93,000 miles, and yesterday, it started making a new noise. When I turn, there is a loud clicking noise. It almost sounds like a card in bicycle spokes, but loud. It is not clicking very fast either. Maybe a clisck every half second. It does not happen all of the time. It only seems to happen when I am making a sharp turn.
Any ideas what this could be and/or how to repair?
That is typically the telltale sign of a bad CV shaft.
If it happens during sharp turns in both directions, you’ll probably need both front CV shafts.
The age, mileage and sounds all make a good case for a CV joint. I suggest when your mechanic asks, that you choose half shaft (both CV’s) rather than just the offending joint. Do to the cost of labor you will save money in the long run.
Thank-you for the information about the CV shaft. I had the CV boot replaced on the right front wheel last spring, so that would make sense. Do you know how much I should expect to pay to have this work done?
