Highly unlikely. Body kits were available to make 87 BMWs look like an M tech 1. Very few, if any, imported to the USA.

The 1987 M1 is not a 3 series, so no, what every you are looking at is either not an M1 or not a 3 series. M1s are rare enough that I bet it isn’t an M1. Here’s what an M1 looks like.
