07 jeep compass front axle fell off

Do you happen to remember the model?

S-class
c-class
e-class
clk
slk

and so on . . .

The reason I’m asking is that some/many of them had very “unconventional” ball joints at around the 2000 model year

This was a common part at the time. The part on the right side would shear off, when it catastrophically failed.

They were all load bearing lower ball joints, unlike George’s 1992 Corolla, which doesn’t use a load-bearing lower ball joint

coil spring pushes down on strut (left) and wheel pushes up. Ball joint is in tension. Common Asian design

If this is the correct strut for a 2007 Compass

http://www.autozone.com/suspension-steering-tire-and-wheel/shock-strut-front/gabriel-ultra-shock-strut-front/443197_695444_1759

then the ball joint is not under tension.

That picture makes me think of Honda/Acura

The strut bolts to knuckle in compass setup. The merc I saw was a 01 E320.

yup, the 2001 E320 had that exact same ball joint which I posted a picture of

When it broke, it the control arm and steering knuckler were probably also damaged, among other things

Not a cheap repair . . . on any vehicle
