You cannot go over the speed limit to pass another vehicle

+1
I do that at least once a week. It’s a lot of fun, and it only takes about 2 miles off of my EV range when I do a really hard extended acceleration run like that.

The peoples that Columbus(and other European conquerers) encountered in the Caribbean islands and North America itself were NOT INDIAN! Columbus called them that because India was his intended, but not ultimate, destination.

I keep repeating this to every thick-head I meet, but it doesn’t seem to register.

The word Indian came to be used because Christopher Columbus repeatedly expressed the mistaken belief that he had reached the shores of South Asia. Convinced he was correct, Columbus fostered the use of the term Indios (originally, “person from the Indus valley”) to refer to the peoples of the so-called New World.

The term America came into use as a referent to the continents of the Western Hemisphere as early as 1507, when the German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller published a map naming them after the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci. The word American was soon thereafter appended to Indian to differentiate the indigenous peoples of these regions from those of South Asia.

And remember that American Indians did not have the wheel yet to help them when going on hunts, so no ATV’s, Jeeps, Hummers vehicles, other than Horse’s… just trying to keep it somewhat car related… lol

While your information is–of course–correct, I am having a hard time understanding how you manage to slip that info into all of your casual conversations.

Because I am rapidly losing patience dealing with this, and other nonsense.

“American Indians”

“Speed limit = do not drive below it” (implied or explicit)

etc.

Actually no horses until brought over by Europeans.

Anyone that made it through 6th grade knows that.
Collective nouns are American Indian, Native American, or First Nations.

Well I wasn’t there, but that may be debatable, the Indians may have had a small amount of Horses before the Europeans brought them over…

Go Horse Power… lol

I’m a first generation American born to immigrants from Europe precisely because the sharing way they live was too much to bear.

In 1961 my dad had 2 small kids he was worried about providing for, a job that paid the bills (but not much else) with not much prospect for advancement, and life seemed pretty bland.

He was bemoaning his predicament with a friend one night and his friend patted him on the shoulder and said “You’ve got nothing to worry about. If your kids are hungry social services is here. If they need a roof over their heads, housing authority will tend to it. If you get sick, the medical service will help you get well. The welfare state will see to things so you don’t have to.”

Dad told me that was the most depressing thing he ever heard. With nothing to accomplish in life, he might as well roll over and die right there. That night he knew he had to come to the US. On mom’s side of the family, they once got notice from the housing authority that they needed to move out of their flat. It seems that grandpa made enough money to afford a larger place, and the flat they were living in was needed for someone less able. Grandma decided it was nobody’s business how much they could afford and the family decided to put in for immigration to a freer place.

When my uncle came to the US with his family, my cousins came home from school with papers to fill out since they qualified for free lunches and dental care. My uncle tore up the forms and told them they weren’t here to be beggars and would pay their own way or do without.

What does all this have to do with cars and speed limits? Like you say, it’s an attitude. More than an attitude actually. The belief that each of us is responsible for ourselves. The distrust in the state making decisions for us thinking they know what we need. The desire to do buy as big or as small a car as we want. These things are baked in, they’re a part of our DNA so to speak. I don’t need the government to tell me what kind of food to eat or how to cook it. I don’t need regulations to tell me my car needs airbags or collision avoidance.

My mother is still alive. These days she will often comment “the socialism is creeping in everywhere. I had to leave Holland because of it, but I’m too old to move again.” Then she gets in her big old Buick and drives to In-N Out for a burger.

You know what? You keep pushing for what you want, I’ll keep pushing for what I want, and somewhere down the line we might have something we can all live with.

That article says they got them in the 1500s from the Spanish.

That has always been my understanding.
The Native Americans got horses, and the Europeans got tomatoes, potatoes, and tobacco.

Well, they did use A wheel.
Just trying to lighten the mood.

I have no problem with calling them by the second two names. Additionally: Indigenous Americans, Indigenous Peoples, etc.

Just leave the “Indian” part in INDIA, where it belongs!

But a lot of people here certainly need a dictionary so they can learn the definition of the word LIMIT!

Funny thing is, American Indians mostly just want to be called Indians, you clearly have your head in the sand… American Indians don’t like the names you want to give them, most are HAPPY with the simple name Indian…

I’ll leave a note with my favorite casino next time I’m there. They will need to change some signage.

They’re NOT. They’re telling manufacturers to make cars with them. The alternative is what the insurance companies want - “You don’t wear a seatbelt and get injured in an accident - you pay for your injuries yourself.” Insurance companies have been pushing that for DECADES.

Older ones, perhaps, because they grew up in that relatively ignorant era when descendants of Europe called them that.

Younger? Native American, Indigenous, first peoples, or more preferably, by their tribal name.

Just remember, the U.S. is alone, again in another aspect: referring to its first peoples by the nationality of the Asian subcontinent. In fact, in discourse between people in the U.S. and in Europe, the latter are confused then they hear Americans refer to “Indians”…

“Who do they mean by ‘Indian’ - someone from
India, or the original north American continentals?”

So you just stay right there in the 1950s, and call the first peoples “Indians” all you want.

Ignorance is bliss! Time to change the engine oil!

Written by slave owners, go figure!
