Will we ever do away with Hydraulic Braking Systems?

If we shunned technology in real life as much as we do here on these boards we would still be driving horse and buggies.

“So airbags have no benefit?”

Yes they do have a benefit, but when they first came out there were problem, IE they didn’t work very well. But with those benefits there are costs, in many cases the cost is we won’t repair a car because of the airbags. Even when the damage to the car is minor.

“You drive a GM vehicle don’t you.”

No I don’t I’m currently driving a Smart car, which I won in an employee contest. It has plastic body panels which I love. No chips, and it doesn’t dent even when it’s -40 or colder. I do have a blue mark where someone open their door so hard it left paint on my plastic but no dent.

I’m assuming your Prius wasn’t one of the 1.9 Prius recalled due to faulty software or steering column problem or water pump. BTW I do understand how the Prius works and was looking at buying one but I don’t fit well inside them.

I don’t shun technology, but as I have stated when it come to my safety I then to be very conservative. Sure I’ll buy cutting edge when it comes to something that won’t kill me if it don’t work, but on stuff that will, ie brakes, I want proof that it’s better than what is currently out there. Once they get self driving cars perfected I would and probably will buy one, but I’m not going to be first in line.

“If you really wanted to make cars safer put a huge spike in the middle of the steering wheel…”

The point I was trying to make, was that with all the stuff we are putting in cars that is newer, better, safer, many times make our lives more dangerous, because the feeling of being safer means many people take more chances. Risk compensation is well known and pretty well studied, so as we make cars safer the more risks people take. Blizzard, why stay home my cars is AWD, road slick, no worry my car has anti-lock brakes, can’t be bothered to look before you change lanes why the car will tell me if someone is there, can’t pay attention to the road the car will tell me if I’m moving out of my lane and my car will brake it I get too close. In the past we expected people to drive and know how to do so, today we are taking that responsibility away. By increasing the danger, ie a spike, people would take fewer chances, pay more attention and generally drive safer.
