Why your "stainless steel" exhaust clamp rusted out in one winter — the fridge magnet test

I work in exhaust fabrication — 20+ years of bending, welding, and shipping clamp-and-pipe components — and I keep running into the same myth, so I wanted to share what actually separates real stainless from the stuff that rusts.

The story usually goes like this: someone buys a “stainless steel” clamp or exhaust component online for a price that seems too good to be true. Six months later, one salty winter, and it looks like it came off a barn find — orange dust everywhere, seized hardware, sometimes the clamp has literally rusted through and let the pipe sag or leak.

Here’s the thing: real 304 stainless doesn’t do that. One winter of road salt is a Tuesday for genuine SS304. If it’s rusting in months, it was never 304 to begin with.

The fridge magnet test (takes 10 seconds)

Genuine 304 is austenitic — it’s weakly magnetic to non-magnetic. So:

  • Grab a magnet off your fridge.
  • Stick it to the clamp.
  • Strong snap-on pull = it’s not 304. Could be 430 stainless (which DOES rust), could be plain galvanized steel with a polish on it.

Fair warning on the nuance: cold-working 304 (heavy forming, welding seams) can make the formed edges slightly magnetic. So a faint pull on a bend or weld is normal. A hard snap anywhere on the body of the clamp means walk away.

The price floor test (takes 2 seconds)

Raw 304 material costs real money before anyone even cuts it. When you see a “304 stainless” exhaust clamp listed for a couple bucks, the math physically doesn’t work. Someone in that chain swapped the material. Legit 304 clamps cost more because the metal itself costs more — there’s no clever factory trick around that.

The timeline test (hindsight, but useful)

If a “stainless” part shows surface rust within 3–6 months of normal driving, it’s not 304 and it never was. Real 304 can stain slightly from embedded steel contamination (like from a grinding wheel), but it doesn’t bloom orange in a season.

Why sellers get away with it

“Stainless steel” is not a regulated claim on most marketplaces. 430 stainless is stainless. 201 stainless is stainless. Both rust WAY faster than 304. Listing says “stainless,” buyer sees shiny, sale closes. The rust shows up months later, past the review window.

What I tell people who ask

  • If you’re keeping the car, buy the clamp once, from someone who publishes the actual alloy, and verify with the magnet when it arrives.
  • If you’re in the salt belt, this matters double — a rusted-through clamp means a sagging exhaust, and a sagging exhaust means cracked welds and leaks downstream.
  • The magnet test also works on exhaust wraps’ hardware, band clamp shells, and pretty much any “stainless” fastener on the car.
