MY 1999 VW PASSAT TOOK A BEATING FROM ONE OF OAKLAND’S INFAMOUS POTHOLES. AMONG THE CASUALTIES WAS A WHEEL BEARING. THE DEALERSHIP RECOMMENDS REPLACING THE HUB AND BEARINGS AS A SET, SINCE PRESSING THE BEARINGS IN AND OUT MAY AFFECT THE ABS SENSORS. THE COST IS $400 VS $600. SOUND RIGHT? THANKS
I worked for a dodge dealer and when we had to change front bearings we had to press them in place . the hub could get bent. it was best to replace both
I would replace the hub, but not for that reason. VW hubs shouldn’t suffer any damage from replacing a bearing. If they damage it during the repair, then they should be responsible for the expense. I would replace it because VW wheel bearings are really tough, and being a VW specialist shop, we have never replaced a VW wheel bearing thast can remember in the 9 years we have been in business. So if your bearing was damaged by this pothole, the hub may be bent already. Slightly bent hubs cause front end vibration which plagues many cars, that a lot of very good repair shops can’t isolate… Change the hub too.
Thank you both…I did have the hub replaced…
