What is a fair price for a oil change

I have a 2020 Mitsubishi outlander that I bought used in January and am looking now of getting a oil change done after driving about 3600 miles over the past 11 or so months. This is going to sound crazy but I have not paid for a oil change for a few years, in fact the last time I paid for one was in 2020 as all the ones I have had done on the other cars I had were done for free by the dealership as they were new cars and i would get 2-3 free oil changes per new car. I looked into it and a local quick change oil place wanted $100 for a change using full synthetic. Is that what they are costing now or should I look around at other options. Me doing the oil change myself is not an option as I have health issues that prevent me from doing it.

It depends on where you’re located and who’s providing the service.

But a $100 is about right.

Avoid quick lube places, try to find an independent shop, they have real mechanics and you have a better chance of a quality job.

Do yourself a favor, and skip the quick change places.

Ask around among people that you know for a reputable, locally owned, and independent shop. Take it there for all of your maintenance needs.

This doesn’t answer your question, but local shops with good reputations won’t be overcharging. They are also less likely to do the wrong things (like over or undertorque your drain bolt, forget to add oil, use the wrong kind of oil, and so on…)

This will also give you an ongoing relationship with people when you run into the need for other kinds or repairs and/or diagnostics.

I used to think reg oil change was $30 and syn was 75. Even though syn oil only costs $10 more in a jug. I guess $30 deals are long gone.

I often find the dealer has a special that makes the oil change cost reasonable, and it is recorded on my car’s file.

I do my own for about $30 but I think in 50 years I’ve only had the dealer do it about three times. Seems to me $70 and $50 but people are paid more now. The Acura dealer has a drive in no appointment quick change so takes on the quick change folks head on. Don’t worry about a fair price once a year. Shop quality not price.

Yes!

When the cheap oil changes at the quickie places goes wrong if they strip your oil pan plug ($500), forget to put the fresh oil ($7000) in or double gasket the filter ($7000).

The dealership that I use charges $90 for a full-synthetic oil change, but that fee includes tire rotation and a bunch of inspections. I guess that “just” a synthetic oil change would probably be ~$75.

$100 seems a little more than I’d expect, but not by much. If you can get it done at a well-recommended inde shop for about the same, that’s better. Then you’ll have a shop to go to when the car needs other services or repairs.

While you’re under warranty, the best price you can find from a dealer is the “Best Price”.
If the engine explodes, the additional cost of no warranty hassles will look like a great bargain.

After warranty, regular old changes and vehicle inspections by a competent Independent Mechanic will be the best price

Good thing you don’t own a Bugatti. If you did, changing the oil would cost you between $20,000 and $25,000.

And if you want to watch what they do during the 27 hour oil change:

In my part of the world, I can get a full synthetic oil change and tire rotation for the $80-90 range. This is both at Walmart, and/or a local independent mechanic.

That’s interesting. Apparently my Lexus dealer charges the same price as Wallyworld.

When I was a high school kid in 1986 and working at the corner Chevron station, a standard lube, oil, filter was $28.90 plus tax.

Yeah, I guess the $30 oil change is long gone.

I have never paid more that $75 for a full synthetic oil chang at my Toyota Dealer and they use a Toyota filter and either Toyota or Mobile 1 oil. The also have a nice waiting room with free coffee and cookies.

My last one was $62 with a coupon from their website.

$100 is reasonable if a thorough job inspecting and taking care of details. I was charging that much 20 years ago for fleet cars and light trucks and installed 10w40 conventional oil.

When was the last time you changed your oil? You can’t even buy the oil and filter for $30 on most cars.

Toyota oil IS Mobile-1. Toyota doesn’t make oil. They farm it out to one of the oil companies and then put the toyota name on it.

Which is why my dealer uses them interchangeably, sometimes one is available at a better price than the other.
