I would like to know how many miles a Volvo S80 is likely to run with basic maintenance, what kinds of things go wrong with the car and how much are repairs compared to American made cars? Any other information about his car would also be appreciated. Maria
If we knew what you’re driving now, it might help.
Properly maintained, a Volvo S80 should run 200,000 miles or more, but you’re asking about “basic maintenance,” and that’s not the same thing. If you’re going to buy a Volvo S80, you MUST follow the maintenance schedule religiously. You cannot deviate from the schedule.
Are you willing to read and follow the maintenance schedule, and pay whatever the costs might be?
The Volvo S80 is a car for people of means. If you are such a person you might be happy with an S80. If, on the other hand, you are a person of limited means (like most of us), a Volvo S80 might bankrupt you, because there is NOTHING on this vehicle that’s inexpensive to service.
Every time you go to the dealer for service it will cost you a fortune, and an independent Volvo mechanic won’t be much less expensive.
If you have unlimited funds to work with, then go for it, and I hope you enjoy your S80.
Frankly there is not much of a real difference between US and other cars in miles expected or problems. There are differences, and some do better than others, the range of differences are not really very large. Now if you compare drivers, you will find a big difference.
Drivers who drive hard and fail to do standard maintenance (see owner’s manual) will have far more problems and shorter life. Even then some will get lucky and get lots of miles with no problems.
