The Volvo making the noise after going through a puddle has a bilge pump that is going bad. The bilge pump is part of the little-known Louisiana ?swamp package? that is only available from Southern Louisiana Volvo dealers. The Brothers can be forgiven for not knowing of this obscure equipment.
There is insufficient clearance between the driveshaft & exhuast systen on these cars. The cold water from a puddle causes the exhaust system to suddenly bend up and touch the driveshaft. There are new exhuast hangers available which increase the clearance. This is described in a Volvo Tech Net Note available to all technicians at the Volvo dealership.
