While I think that most of us can agree that distracted drivers are a hazard to everyone else, I’m not sure that this approach to policing is appropriate.
Well, if you’re already driving distracted staring at a phone, you won’t see even a uniformed police officer standing there…seems ridiculous for that purpose…
Did Officer Ghillie borrow the suit from his reserve training group?
He’s a former bush pilot.
If someone pleaded innocent, I wonder who would appear, the cop dressed as a bush or the cop who probably pulled the “offender” over and wrote the ticket… It would seem that glancing through binoculars with your face obscured and only catch a fleeting view as the vehicle passes would hardly pass muster of documenting the situation…
Times are tough for Chewbacca.
How was your day honey? Oh it was fine until this dog came by and thought I was a fire hydrant.
I had the same thought. It seems like an unusual way to enforce distracted driving laws. I understand the goal is to catch people who are using their phones, but I’d also expect there to be clear evidence if a citation is issued. It would be interesting to know how often this approach actually holds up if someone decides to challenge the ticket in court.
Cops talk and judges listen. Your word against another unknown driver is one thing, but when the police provide visual evidence, the judge believes them.
I was on a jury like that and we convicted him. If you are going to fight it, you need more than just he said, she said.
Sorry to hear that!
74 violations in one day at one location indicates a lack of driver compliance. Enforcing the law more than once a year might get drivers off the telephone while driving.
I do not understand your remark. Would you want to live in a world where the police are the judge, jury, and executioner? I for one would want an opportunity to have a “group of my peers” adjudicate a situation other than someone who might be a jack booted ■■■■ applying their interpretation of the law…
74 in one day suggests the law needs to be changed lest it become a mockery.
I’m pro police but there are some real nut jobs in the field. Kinda related, there was an article on the flock cameras around the state and all the police talking about how much they helped solving crime. I just say find another way instead of recording the movements of everyone. They will go to no end if allowed. There appears to be a rash of vandalism. One city lost them all. I thought it might be 4th amendment folks but appears more anti ice. Either way some cities are getting the message.
@ChrisTheTireWhisperer are you exempt from jury duty?
Ha ha. My boss told me you don’t have to be very smart to get out of jury duty. I told him I had no intention of getting out of it and it was a persons civil responsibility to serve. He got out of the draft too. I went to his funeral. Thought it was my duty.
The question is back at you, “Who” are you referring to?
I thought it was pretty clear that he addressed that question to the guy who talks to his tires.
If they’re distracted, they’ll be too distracted to notice you anyways, did they really have to do allat
Based on the verdicts returned by juries during the last 8 years in high-profile cases covered by the media, the jury system is something I morally would not want to associate with.
