Vehicle safety requirements needed for pedestrian/bicycle safety?

I see the right hand for right turn/left hand for left turn from cyclists frequently. I don’t do it that way myself when cycling, I use the motorist signal method; but it is just a matter of personal preference. I was thinking @Bing was saying he saw a cyclist signal both R&L at the same time, maybe they changed their minds mid-turn. Dangerous for obvious reasons, one b/c the cyclist has no hands at all on the handlebars.

I haven’t been to bike riding school since 1961 where the police taught hand signals. For some reason adult bikers found it necessary to change the instructions. Regardless, I try to stay as far away from bikers as I can.

We never wore spandex then, or helmets, or those clip on mirrors. We had big mirrors, streamers on the handle bar grips, and balloons or baseball cards on the spokes. Back when kids were kids and roamed freely until supper time.

The good old days when kids could be kids. :grinning:

I was recently doing a crossword puzzle, came to this clue: Where are streamers found? Couldn’t figure it out, next day saw a kid riding a bike with handlebar streamers … “voila” I thought, see, bike riding pays off. Didn’t take, answer was “party” … lol …

Must have been a new journalist writing the puzzle. Seems like when adults got involved in bike riding, the spoiled it for the kids. Nit the only thing they spoiled though.

Speaking of spandex, I had to ride two miles each way in my little league baseball uniform and it was really scratchy and not comfortable. Dad always asked how many hits I got that day and I’d say came close a couple times but the sun was in my eyes. Glad when the season ended.

Agreed but back in the day, they taught kids to use the same signaling on bicycles. When I took my motorcycle test in the 70s, they also required the same signaling as a car. Of course there, the throttle is on the right side  There is some benefit to consistency. However, I cannot recall the last time I saw someone hand signal from a car, must be 40+ years ago :grinning:

Before I took the road test for my DL, back in 1965, I had heard conflicting stories as to whether hand signals were required. So, I asked the MV inspector whether I should use hand signals. His answer: Use your own discretion.

Hmmm… so I decided to roll down the window and use hand signals–in addition to using the car’s directional signals.
After the first stop, the inspector said, “That’s one”.
I asked what mistake I had made, and his answer was, “You didn’t use the hand signal for stopping. Because you decided to use hand signals for your turns, you also must use the hand signal for stopping”.
:smack:
Luckily, I didn’t incur any other infractions, and I passed the road test.

Well, at least your state’s tax dollars are being used wisely … lol …good story +1

I don’t know if I lost points or not but took my test in a snow storm. When I performed my parallel park, I had to get out and clean the back window before pulling out again. I got a 94 so must have done something he didn’t like.

I always find it weird how seemingly insignificant facts like that stick in our memories. I can still remember my college-entrance test ACT scores. And the grade I got on a psychology course paper, optional & unrelated course to anything I’ve ever done since. And all 50+ years ago. I remember my first job’s hourly rate , $1.45/ hour, but no idea of any of my subsequent job’s salaries … lol …

Yeah I remember a lot too but Danged if I have any idea what my sat score was. The only test answer I ever got wrong was in sixth grade and the pronunciation of bag. I still think I was right but my wife still laughs a me, so I avoid the word and say sack instead. Oops, up to sixth grade. Many errors after that. Yeah, 57 year class reunion last week and I still remember Mary getting sick in 6th grade. Still can’t eat some stuff because of it.

Ok car related. Still bothers me. My teacher had a new red 56 Chevy. He got hit in minneapolis by a cement truck and smashed the quarter panel. When he got it back, the red was a slight shade off. I’ve been a paint match fanatic ever since. Probably would have been painted by my future warrant officer at the Chevy garage. I meant to discuss it with him but was usually in a foul mood.

Isn’t there something else I should b3 doing?

Speaking of signals…

We’d always tell the girls, no your other left. Must have been an inherited thing but those mud flaps would help.
