Vehicle safety requirements needed for pedestrian/bicycle safety?

I seriously doubt if any type of safety modifications to vehicles could prevent accidents like this one.

One more insane person?
Someone with a death wish?
Thankfully, the motorist was found to be blameless.

The law of unintended consequences. Push bike riding. Create bike lanes on road ways. Become surprised that more bikes get hit by vehicles. In downtown Minneapolis they even created bike lanes between the curb and parked cars cautioning people to watch for bikes before opening doors. Might not be madness but getting close.

Soon all cars may have this. Pre-Collision System With Pedestrian Detection .Supposedly stops the car.

hmmm ā€¦ if it is effective at reducing pedestrian and cycling deaths, maybe the govā€™t safety officials will be forced to mandate that function be included on all new vehicles.

Nope. Hard to prevent that much stupid

E bikes, electric scooter and similar are getting to be a big problem around me. Iā€™ve clocked a few at 25 mphā€¦ a scooter! And bikes even faster. They probably arenā€™t allowed to go that fast but there must be hacks to get around it. And they ride on the sidewalks on busy streetsā€¦at full speed.

There was a news report this week about that very problem here. An out of proportion increase in the number of electric-bike injuries, owners hacking the speed control circuity is one reason.

It does.
When I am backing out of my garage, if I get too close to a shrub, that system applies the brake, and as I have found when backing out of a parking space in a parking lot, if a pedestrian or a cyclist walks in back of my vehicleā€“despite the visual and auditory warningsā€“the brakes are applied.

  • 68 mph top speed
  • 100 miles of range

Not the same type of scooterā€¦ a stand up scooter like a Razor scooter with a motor, like 10 year olds ride. Not a small motorcycle.

It is a stand up scooter

Itā€™s too hard to explain from this afternoon but kids riding their bikes are vehicles but walking their bikes they are pedestrians. I planned to stay stopped anyway until they were out of my way but a lady making a turn and halfway into the intersection stops, rolls her window diwn and waves them to proceed. So the two kids warily rode their bikes through the cross walk and the lady finally made her turn feeling good about herself even though she created a hazard. When you wave someone through, you assume all liability.

A 68 mph stand up scooter?? Who is the idiot that designed that?

And where would you ride it? Without registration, lights, ectā€¦

Was it really that hard to figure out they were pointing to where they intended to go? Like exactly the same effect that a turn signal has on carsā€¦ it couldnā€™t be that hard to figure out that you canā€™t use the same hand indication in a car simply because you canā€™t reach your right arm out the passenger window.

I knew where they were going and I wa# walking anyway. Thing is hand signals were used in cars before turn signal lights but for some reason people on bikes do developed something different.

Letā€™s not forget about the problem of people who are texting while attempting to drive. In addition to endangering pedestrians and cyclists, they endanger every driver on the roadā€“including themselves.

Very experienced cyclist here. My bike has roughly half the miles my car has (45,000). Where I live the cars are very respectful of the cyclists, maybe because we are all around 70 years old. I usually use my left arm to signal a right turn, but many times the cars will just wave back at me as if I was waving. I do agree that the fatality rate is probably more due to ignorant cyclists and pedestrians.

Is that a real photo, or did someone make that as a meme? Does the ā€œBaker Casket Companyā€ really exist?

The text on the side of the truck appears to be photoshopped, but the text on the back of the truck looks genuine, at least to my eyes.

But, it came from the internet, and as Abe Lincoln said, ā€œYou canā€™t believe everything that you see on the internetā€.

I say photoshopped.

The seams at the folding parts of the rollup door donā€™t match.

Bing - ā€œHeh heh. I saw a biker down there extend their right arm to make a right turn and their left arm to make a left turn.ā€

Iā€™m not sure what you find wrong with this. This is the standard way turn signals are taught. The use of the left arm to signal a right turn was invented for car drivers because itā€™s hard to reach out the right windows from the driverā€™s seat.
