About the only way I’d consider a turbo is if it comes stock on a small engine economy car with a small (possibly diesel) engine. At least in this scenario, what you get with the turbo is good fuel economy and decent power with a small efficient power plant.
When my brother was shopping for a new “family car” he looked at the mileage ratings and decided that the VW GTI (2009) had the best balance of performance and mileage of what he considered (he sticks to brands that his favorite shop specializes in) has no problem powering up the steep hill between work and home. It was supposed to be his wife’s car but after the kids arrived she ends up driving the Subaru wagon most of the time since it’s roomier for the kids
The engine in my car is the same one that comes from the Mazdaspeed 3; they just put an automatic on it instead of a stickshift. I didn’t buy it for MPG, I bought it for the fun factor. If I was concerned about MPG, I would have bought a Prius
